LIS10 - 2023 Channel Update

G’day G’day! I’m back on YouTube!

If you’re unfamiliar, back in 2017 I started uploading explainer videos on Game & Narrative Design specifically focusing on Tabletop Role Playing Games such as Dungeons & Dragons.

I made the videos from a place of trying to encourage those too nervous or too intimidated by professional streamers to just have a go, and hopefully show that the whole experience is quite simple, approachable, and malleable to each individual's tastes.

You can check out a sample of the Archive of the videos from that period of time in this Article, or join LIS10 to access them all!

Since then I've been on my own journey professionally from Game Development into Film & Screen Producing, and I want to continue to share what I've been learning and experiencing with others across the world.

Which led to this space, my website, and the return of my YouTube and Patreon, albeit it with a wider focus than before.

What's New?

Industry Articles (Follow the RSS here)

I've created this space as a freely accessible platform to share news, developments, and other points of interest within the design, narrative, and tech spaces within Screen, VFX, and Gaming.

That may sound broad, but that's the domain I'm living in and find the most interesting. While I started in Animation and Game Development, I've now found myself wearing the Producer hat in Film & Screen through the guise of VFX and Virtual Production. This space is a rapidly expanding collision of two industries that, at the time of writing (2023) is hounded by buzzwords and poorly communicated concepts, which is what I'm aiming to address in the coming months.

Taking complex, niche, emerging concepts and translating them into actionable morsels that you can walk away wielding to improve your personal projects, and studio productions alike.

Upcoming Article on the significance, and actionable utilisation, of AI Motion Capture.

LIS10 (View Membership About here)

LIS10 is the new home of all things TTRPG, but with more welcoming language that can apply to a broader audience and with a vastly reduced barrier to entry as compared to anything "gamery". Each lesson is accompanied with actionable next steps or worksheets that reinforce the meaning behind the lesson, and ensure LIS10ers can observe a sense of progression and purpose behind their storytelling.

Structurally LIS10 takes the form of a curriculum, starting at level 1 with the most basic questions and concepts related to Live Interactive Storytelling and building from there. However as many of those interested in LIS10 are at a higher level of experience and skill with TTRPG style content, there are also workshops situated outside the 1-10 level system that are crafted in response to the LIS10er subscriber's feedback and direct questions.

The first of these is an 8 episode workshop covering creating a limited 8-episode LIS10 series (such as 8 fortnightly games of a TTRPG, or an 8 episode long-form project), each episode of the workshop being recorded after the previous episode's release, reception, and response is gathered from the LIS10ers to ensure their voices are heard every step of the way.

LIS10 is very much a member-focused curriculum that will continue to adapt to the needs of the LIS10ers as they grow and evolve.

Check out the LIS10er Membership About page for the full list of benefits.

The Mick Ryley YouTube is back up, but rebranded with the wider focus that includes both the Industry perspective, and LIS10 style content mentioned above.

I've always found that communication is much more strongly received when layered in as many mediums as possible. An article is much better when accompanied with a speech by the author, a speech is improved with extra visual aids, those visuals aids can be improved by tailoring them to the perception of the audience and not the author, better yet if the audience can get hands-on and feel like they're experiencing the lesson themself.

It's not the complexity and tactility of the medium, it's the combination of multiple angles and walkthroughs that I've found deliver the most salient and resonant message, even to a novice in the field. And when trying to communicate complex technical concepts to executives or professionals with limited interest, the efficiency and clarity of communication is essential.

And so, Mick Ryley as a YouTube channel will exist as this welcoming hand to breaking down elements of the Film, Screen, and Gaming industries, as well as LIS10 content, as efficaciously as possible.

Patreon (Support on Patreon)

I have launched my Patreon as the primary support method to enable all of this content I'm sharing to continue. I truly want to keep making videos, articles, and giving talks that communicate difficult and emerging concepts freely, but it takes a lot of time and money, and the more support I have through Patreon the more time I can dedicate to sharing them with you all.

I've tailored the Patreon reward levels to interest area of the individual, or company, offering their support.

From the interested individual, to the working professional who wants access to project files, to the studio who needs to request a specific walkthrough.

Any and all support is hugely appreciated!

Tiers start at $5 and scale to match your area of interest!

What's that Virtual Production thing?

I mentioned Virtual Production a couple of times, I would explain it here, but this is one of those things that keeps getting misunderstood... and it would spoil an upcoming video and article I'm making to explain this very concept.

In short, it's the current technological wave shaking up the way-things-are in Film & Screen development and we've barely started to see its impact yet.

Here are some wonderful resources and figures that might whet your appetite on the topic.

Industrial Light & Magic - The Mandalorian LED Volume Virtual Production

William Faucher - A Virtual Production Artist and Communicator

Greg Corson - A Brilliant Virtual Production Tech-Focused Hobbiest

When can I find more TTRPG stuff?

If you're just a TTRPG fan, and don't care at all about any of this Film Industry stuff I'm discussing, that's fair, and that's precisely why I've created LIS10 as a safe and isolated space for those of you who just want to focus on having fun role-playing.

Consider becoming a LIS10er, or signing up to my Patreon to push the future LIS10 content in the direction you want.
Whether that's specific to your system or your playstyle, rest assured there will be more coming to suit you.

As time goes on and I gain more support, I can focus more time on these projects and release content more quickly!

Thanks for sticking around ‘till the end, I’ll see you soon in the next one!

Mick
